It’s home to the world’s smallest park
Would you believe that there’s a park in Portland that’s no bigger than 2 feet around? It’s true! Mill Ends Park is a tiny urban park located in downtown Portland in a median strip along SW Naito Parkway. It was created in 1948 as a 452-square-inch plot initially intended to be the site of a light pole — but the pole never arrived in the city. In its place, weeds began sprouting in the hole, and the area became unsightly. It was then that a columnist from The Oregon Journal named Dick Fagan planted some flowers in the spot and called it Mill Ends, a reference to the remains of lumber. From there, the city began maintaining the property, and in 1971, the Guinness Book of Records named it the smallest park in the world, a distinction it holds to this day.
