- The Valley covers more than 4,200 square miles along the northern bank of the Rio Grande, the dividing waterway between the U.S.-Mexico border.
- It includes four counties and the following cities on the U.S. side: Brownsville, Edinburg, Harlingen, McAllen, Mission, Pharr, Rio Grande City, San Juan and Welasco.
The Best of the Valley
There’s plenty to explore in the expansive Rio Grande Valley. Here are some popular activities to enjoy, either before you leave or when you return for a visit:
Port Isabel Lighthouse
This historic structure was built in 1852 to guide ships through the Brazos Santiago Pass. Climb to the top for great views of South Padre Island. And while you’re there, check out the Port Isabel Historical Museum and Treasures of the Gulf Museum.
Civil War sites
The Valley is believed to have seen more Civil War battles than any other area in Texas. History buffs can soak up the atmosphere at places like Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site and Fort Brown in Brownsville.
Sabal Palm Sanctuary
Located 6 miles outside of Brownsville, this 557-acre preserve is dedicated to the only palm tree native to Texas. The Rabb Plantation House, an 1892 Victorian mansion, serves as the park visitors center, which leads to 5 miles of nature trails.
Gulf Coast beaches
South Padre Island, Port Isabel and Port Mansfield are popular spots for beach lovers, sport fishermen and bird watchers.
Raspas
This traditional treat can be found at stands and food trucks throughout the Valley. It’s essentially a snow cone with an array of topping options from sweet to savory, spicy and even sour flavors like pickles, Kool-Aid powder and chile.
