More than 100 years before Charlotte, known as “The Queen City,” was incorporated in 1768, the area that is now NYC was operating as a Dutch trading port. The settlement, located on present-day Manhattan Island, was known as New Amsterdam. Later, the settlement was surrendered to English troops who renamed the area New York after the Duke of York.

While Charlotte also has a humid subtropical climate, the weather is typically cooler in New York City, closer to the Atlantic Ocean.  

In NYC, yearly temperatures typically stay between 26 and 84 degrees, while Charlotte’s average range is 30 to 90. 

Rainfall is similar in both cities, around 45 inches annually. However, the average snowfall is significantly different, at 25 inches per year in NYC compared to only 2 inches in Charlotte.
