St. Louis, or the “Gateway to the West,” is just under 800 miles from Houston. Making the move means adjusting to life in a smaller city.

The independent city of St. Louis has a population of 301,578 and over 2.8 million in the metro, which extends into Illinois. It is significantly smaller than Houston, which has over 2.3 million within the city limits and 7.1 million in the metro.

The cost of living in St. Louis is lower than in Houston. Housing prices are lower, and the job market is strong. There are employment opportunities in finance, healthcare and transportation with some of the top employers, Edward Jones, Mercy Hospital St. Louis and Boeing.

The public school system is robust and boasts a low student-teacher ratio. Multiple charter schools are also in the area.

Adults can find education and employment at Saint Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis.
