Moving from Kansas City, KS, to New York, NY

What to expect when you’re not in Kansas anymore

Take some time to prepare for a faster-paced lifestyle during the 1,200 miles it takes to drive from the Kansas City area to the largest city in the U.S.

Kansas City, KS, is tiny compared to New York City, with a population of around 157,000 (2.4 million in the metro, which includes the adjacent Kansas City, MO).

NYC, or “The Big Apple,” has over 8.8 million residents and 20.1 million in the metro. It’s safe to say that life will be much different than you’re used to in Kansas. Keep reading to learn what to expect in “The City That Never Sleeps.”

Weather in The Big Apple

You’ll get all four seasons in New York as you did in Kansas City, but with some noticeable differences. Although NYC’s average winter low of 26 degrees is 6 degrees warmer than KC’s, your new home typically receives more snow each year. You can expect an average of 25 inches in New York, compared to only 16 inches in Kansas City.

New York gets slightly more rain, around 47 inches annually, compared to 40 inches in KC.

Summers are warm in NYC, but with an average high temperature of 84 degrees, days will feel much cooler than in Kansas, where temperatures could reach 100 degrees during the hottest season.

New York City excitement for all ages

NYC offers something for your whole family. For the youngest (and young at heart) members, check out the Bronx Zoo and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. And don’t miss some top tourist attractions like Central Park, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.

Musical fans can find multiple shows on and off Broadway, but if those aren’t your style, there are plenty of other options for fine arts. Don’t miss other plays, ballets and symphony performances throughout the city. You’ll also find museums like the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

If you’re a pro sports fan, the New York metro area has multiple baseball, basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse and soccer teams. There are also tons of recreational leagues if you want to participate in the action.

Making a living in the city

New York City is known for its high cost of living, but it’s also full of career opportunities. It’s America's financial and publishing capital, and multiple Fortune 500 companies are based there.

Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Pfizer and Verizon Communications maintain offices in NYC. Many residents find employment in the arts, education, healthcare, retail management and service industries.

Nearly 400 public schools operate in the area, with a low student-teacher ratio. Multiple private schools are also available.
