Moving from Kansas City, MO, to Denver, CO

Reaching for a new lifestyle in the Mile-High City

Moving 600 miles from Kansas City, MO, to Denver, CO, means changes in population, weather and more — with beautiful mountain views.

Denver is called the “Mile-High City” due to its elevation of one mile above sea level, so you’ll also need to plan to acclimate to a higher altitude while you adjust to a larger city.

Kansas City is smaller, with a population of around 508,000 (2.4 million in the metro), and Denver has just under 716,000 (3 million in the metro). Keep reading to learn more about your new home.

Less rain and more snow in Colorado

While you enjoyed up to 15 inches of snow in Kansas City, you’ll want to plan for 4-times as much in Denver. That’s right — up to 60 inches annually! You can expect less yearly rainfall in Denver, which is 17 inches, compared to 42 inches in KC.

Despite the precipitation differences, the summer high temperature averages 89 degrees in both cities. Winter lows are typically around 20 degrees in KC and 18 degrees in Colorado. However, with Denver’s sometimes unpredictable weather, you might feel all four seasons in one day, so be prepared!

You might notice more sunshine in Denver, which averages around 245 sunny days per year compared to 215 days in Kansas City.

Sports culture

Are you worried about missing your Kansas City Chiefs Pro Football team? In your new home, you can still cheer for your Chiefs, but you might also want to check out the Denver Broncos (NFL). Other pro teams include the Colorado Rockies (MLB), the Denver Nuggets (NBA), the Colorado Avalanche (NHL), and the Colorado Rapids (MLS).

Denver is also home to the first professional football team for women, the Denver Bandits. If lacrosse is more your style, don’t miss the Denver Outlaws (Major League Lacrosse) and the Colorado Mammoth (National Lacrosse League).

Finding your place

Denver’s unique culture has something for everyone. Known for being laid-back and environmentally conscious, the city offers plenty of outdoor activities that leave a low carbon footprint. For shopping, don’t miss local craft coffee shops, farmers’ markets and artisanal products.

The bus and light rail systems downtown make getting around the city easy. Be sure to check out Larimer Square, a historic district lined with boutiques, nightlife and restaurants.

Don’t miss the Denver Zoo, home to over 4,000 animals. And for more family-friendly fun, visit the Molly Brown House Museum and the Buffalo Bill Museum to learn more about Denver’s Old West history.
