Moving from Miami, FL to Minneapolis, MN
Moving from Miami, FL to Minneapolis, MN
From beach-front to riverfront, you may not find the same crowds in Minneapolis, but you won't be bored, and the atmosphere is clean, cool, and family-friendly. Instead of cruise ships, you'll see paddle boats cruising on the river. And instead of Miami's Everglades, you will have 12 major lakes to explore.
Trading in Miami's beaches and palm trees for the “City of Lakes” doesn't have to mean a huge lifestyle change. The cost of living between Miami and Minneapolis is relatively the same, with housing being the exception. Buying a home in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area is more affordable, and the economies of these two cities share some similarities as well. Both are home to several large company headquarters, and the Midwestern location of Minneapolis makes it a prime business center between Chicago and Seattle.
Minneapolis is just as diverse as Miami with large Somali, Hmong, and Vietnamese populations. The Hispanic population is also growing quickly, so speaking Spanish should still come in handy.
Getting an education in Minneapolis
The Minneapolis Public School system is much smaller than Miami's, with a fourth of the number of schools, and only 36,370 students. Despite its smaller size, Minneapolis schools are high-rated for academic quality. For those with a busy work-schedule, before and after-school child care is conveniently available, and there are even year-round classes offered to keep learning going through the summer.
The University of Minnesota is the biggest campus in the city, with a student population that exceeds 50,000. But there are also a large number of private colleges to choose from.
Transportation in Minneapolis
Like Miami, Minneapolis provides convenient and inexpensive public transportation through the Metro Transit. Both the bus and the light rail connect downtown to the airport, and to the Mall of America. It is also a very walkable city, with parks around the city and its lakes. Or, if you prefer to get more of a workout, the Nice Ride bike sharing program is another option for a healthier way to get around town.
The weather in Minneapolis
In Miami, you could literally be on the beach year-round. Even in the winter, the day-time temperatures are warm enough to catch some sun and enjoy the ocean breeze. In Minneapolis, you are certainly more likely to have a white Christmas, and summers are not overly hot. You’ll enjoy the weather year-round here!
Winter Fun in Minneapolis
Although your first instincts may be to stay inside cuddled up in a blanket by the fire with a book or a movie during the cold winter months, there are so many other things that you could do. Winter brings the Urban Cross Country Ski Festival and ice skating at the Depot Rink.
Plus, Minneapolis is a major sports town. Forget college sports (although there's that too), but there are eight national sports teams to keep you busy, including baseball, football, and basketball. Or why not go shopping? Although, there is more than just shopping to do at the Mall of America – see a movie; visit the aquarium; ride some roller coasters; or play some miniature golf.
As far as local eateries, the Latin American Cuisine is not likely to be as diverse, but you will find Spanish and Caribbean inspired dishes. If you start to crave a little taste of Miami, try Victor's 1959 Cafe and El Burrito Cubano.
Planning to move from Miami to Minneapolis:
