Moving from Nashville, TN, to Orlando, FL

Making your way to O-Town

The move from Nashville to Orlando is just under 700 miles and takes about 10 hours to drive. While only two states separate Tennessee and Florida, you can expect significant climate and cultural differences.

Orlando's city population of 308,000 is smaller than Nashville’s 700,000, but the Orlando metro area is larger, with 2.7 million compared to 2 million in Nashville.

Due to tourism in “O-Town,” also called “The Theme Park Capital of the World,” you might notice more traffic in Orlando compared to what you’re used to in Nashville.

Leave four seasons behind in Tennessee

Unlike Nashville, which has four distinct seasons, Orlando only has two — a hot, humid summer and a mild winter.

The change in geography from Tennessee to Florida affects the yearly temperatures. Still, the humid subtropical climate in both cities means a similar average of around 51 inches of rain per year.

Like Nashville summers, you can expect summer highs of around 92 degrees in Orlando. Winter lows below freezing and around 4 inches of snow are a thing of the past back in Nashville. Snow rarely falls in Orlando, especially since the city’s average winter low is around 49 degrees.

Broaden your musical horizons in Orlando

Both Nashville and Orlando have a vibrant local music scene, but the music in Florida is more eclectic. Nashville, or “Music City,” is known for country music, while Orlando has a broader audience.

Orlando has multiple genres, including rock, pop, electronic dance music (EDM), jazz, hip-hop, blues and Latin. Some popular live music venues include the House of Blues, Hard Rock Live, The Social and Will’s Pub.

Don’t miss the Electric Daisy Carnival for EDM fans and the Florida Music Festival, which showcases local talent. You’ll also find jazz and blues festivals in the city.

Working and learning in Orlando

Orlando is the perfect home base if your skillset lies in hospitality and tourism. With theme parks like Walt Disney World, SeaWorld and Universal Studios, you’ll find ample employment options. Other popular job industries include aviation, education, healthcare and video game design.

There are 300 public and private schools for grades K-12 and 9 colleges and universities serving the city.

The cost of living in Orlando is a bit lower than in Nashville. Plus, like Tennessee, Florida has no state income tax, so you’ll bring home more of your salary.
