Moving from New York, NY, to San Francisco, CA

Cross-country moving to California

It’s nearly 3,000 miles from New York to San Francisco, all the way across the country. That’s a lot of miles to cover, and when you move from the most populous city in the United States, your new hometown might feel tiny. Even though San Francisco is the fourth-most populous city in California, with 874,000 residents and 4.6 million in the metro, it’s much smaller than New York, which has 8.8 million residents and 20 million in the metro.

You’ll also notice a difference in population density since San Francisco’s density is about two-thirds what you experienced in “The Big Apple.” Keep reading to learn more about the exciting “Golden Gate City.”

Milder weather ahead

While summer high temperatures in NYC average around 84 degrees, you will notice remarkably cooler summers in San Francisco, with average July highs around 67 degrees.

Snow is rare in San Francisco, compared to NYC’s 25 inches. Temperatures are also relatively warmer, with lows in San Francisco averaging 46 degrees compared to 26 degrees in New York City.

NYC gets around 47 inches of rain annually, but you can dry out a little in your new home since San Francisco averages only 25 inches of rain per year. It is pretty foggy there — so much so that the residents call the fog “Karl.”

Trade subways for streetcars

Unlike New York's massive subway system, San Francisco has a small four-station system. However, the city is most famous for its streetcars. San Francisco is one of the few places in the world where cable cars still operate.

You’ll also find attractions like Alcatraz Island, Golden Gate Park (and Bridge) and the Painted Ladies — gorgeous examples of Victorian architecture featured in multiple movies and television shows.

Living and working in San Francisco

The cost of living in San Francisco is lower than what you’re used to in New York. With average household incomes nearly double the national average and a healthy job market, the city is bursting with opportunities.

Many residents find work with tech companies like Salesforce. Other significant industries include education, finance, government and healthcare.

Twenty-two public schools and multiple private institutions serve K-12 students in the area.
