Military Moving Guide

Planning a military move

New orders = new adventure! But before you can start exploring your next duty station, there’s a little thing to complete called moving. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or experiencing your first Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders, there’s a lot to think about and manage. But don’t worry. We’re here to guide you through the process, offering tips and answering FAQs to make your move as smooth as possible.

Get organized for a PCS with this checklist

Having a solid plan can help PCS moves feel more manageable. Use these steps to cross important tasks off your to-do list.

Create a system to keep track of paperwork

You may be surprised to see how many documents you’ll have and how often you need to reference them. Create a moving file to keep all receipts and paperwork in one place so everything is easy to find.

Schedule a meeting with the Transportation Office

This is when you’ll review your orders and be able to ask questions about moving service options, weight allowances, reimbursement processes, etc. Take note of any important deadlines and requirements so you can align the move date with when you need to report for duty.

Decide how to move

Most PCS moves have the option to use a government-contracted moving company or complete a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DITY (do-it-yourself) move. With a PPM, you choose the moving company to use and manage the logistics yourself. The government will reimburse you 100% of what they would have paid government movers, so you can keep anything left!

The ability to control the details and potentially earn a profit makes DITY moves a popular choice. But they do require some extra work. Talk about all the plans with your family to choose the best option.

And don’t forget about the resources available through Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs to help your family with the transition.

Learn about branch-specific information

There are subtle differences required in reimbursement paperwork and processes for each branch. We’ve created guides to help you navigate these:

FAQs about PPM/DITY moves

Get answers to common questions about DIY military moves.

What’s a PPM military move?

A Personally Procured Move, also known as a DITY (do-it-yourself) move, is a move where you handle both planning and execution rather than the government setting it up. With this option, the government pays you 100% of what they would have paid government movers, and anything left after paying the moving company is yours to keep!

Where does U-Pack provide military moving services?

We service all 50 states, including bases in Hawaii and Alaska. We can deliver on-base, off-base or to temporary housing. Or, to save more, you can unload at a local service center.

Can I pack my own stuff?

Yes! With a PPM, you pack and load your household goods. If you need help loading or unloading, you can add labor to a U-Pack move through HireAHelper

What documents do I need to get reimbursed for a PPM?

The exact documentation varies by branch, but these documents are commonly required:

  • DD Form 2278 (Application for move and counseling checklist)
  • DD Form 1351-2 (Travel voucher)
  • Copy of PCS travel orders
  • Certified weight tickets
  • Copy of paid rental agreement
  • Copy of vehicle registration when utilizing POV and/or boat/trailer

Talk with your Transportation Office to determine the exact requirements.

Note: Remember lodging and meals are not part of the household goods budget. Still, they may be covered by the Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) or Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA, for OCONUS moves) and per diem, so keep your receipts.

Can I move my Pro Gear in a PPM?

Yes, you can move your Pro Gear, but there are limits to the amount and type that can be reimbursed. Read about the guidelines
